The footbinding represents the hardships that the women in chinese culture have to undergo. The foot binding also represents the sturggle woman have to endure to be valued as and actual being in chinese society. The foot binding in the story was to show the first step of Lily beeoming a women. After she experianced this first harship it was only to prepare her for the many others to come in life.

They were also treated very differently and unfairly. Footbinding is one of many tasks that woman and girls at to perform, showing that they had very little say or control.

It shows how in their culture they have to do what their told, and it represents how beauty was one of the main concerns in their culture. The footbinding represents like the comming of age. Needless to say, footbinding is very painful, but in their culture part of growing up.
