Lily's family was poor and could barely survie. whereas snow flower's family was high class, a scholar, and they were rich. if something ever went wrong it would be lily's family's fault because they were poorer. lily's family also had to house and feed snow flower. this would have been a difficult task for lily's family. not to mention that latongs are usually costly.
Lily's family was a family of common farmers, so t make a latong match with a (supposed) high class family was risky.
